9/24/2001 After manual wakeup (the announcement system was broken) we had a rather slow checking out. Every check-in was followed by lots of waiting and milling. Eventually we got to Guayaquil and the Hotel Oro Verde. I roomed with Will Brown, who had to leave about 2am for his flight. I ventured into the city twice, once with Louise and ? to an ATM, second time all the way to their riverwalk with Mary Lea, Rashmika, ?, Jim, Ken, Dennis, and one of the guides. Rode back in a taxi, very cheap. Had dinner at the hotel with big group. Prices were very reasonable, food was excellent, service rather slow. Ken, Peter, some others got fussy about the slowness, but I thoroughly enjoyed an excellent large meal. Had an appetizer with several triangular cake-things called empeñadas and tamales. I had squid in garlic mushroom sauce and shrimp ceveche (raw but marinated in lime juice). both were excellent. Shared pasta and all with Judy Jones. Pasta was great, too. |

9/25/2001 Early rise for a good breakfast before a long, slow trip home. If you've made it this long, here's another (much shorter) page by Will Brown called My Galapagos Vacation |
